This is a short work setting the words of Henry Scott Holland to an orchestral accompaniment. The text presents a beautiful metaphor for death as a sea voyage, where the writer sees the ship pass out of view over the horizon, but at the same time those watching at its destination see it approach. Worth comparing with D H Lawrence’s Ship of Death.

Not to disparage the skills of the other horn players in the orchestra, it seemed wildly over-ambitious, so I thought it might be useful to have a back-up suggestion …. duration is about 17′
