Suite for Horn and Piano
This simple suite of three pieces for horn and piano (Waltz, Caprice, Finale) was written a long time ago and was forgotten. Coming across it again, it seemed worth sharing; the movements are all quite easy, suitable perhaps for an intermediate player. See what you think.
How’s your Constitution?
This year is the 250th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence, and to mark this, here is a piece for SATB choir with piano. Not suitable for those of a MAGA disposition.
Baroque Suite
A dance suite for string quartet, structurally and rhythmically in Baroque style, but with a later harmonic flavour. Originally this piece was written for a horn quartet.
Natur revisited
This horn quartet has grown to seven movements, by the addition of Nebelwand (Fog Bank) and Sturm (Storm). I had wanted to finish with an energetic movement, but had been unable to think of something suitable. Hopefully this works.
The Ship
This is a short work setting the words of Henry Scott Holland to an orchestral accompaniment. The text presents a beautiful metaphor for death as a sea voyage, where the writer sees the ship pass out of view over the horizon, but at the same time those watching at its destination see it approach. Worth comparing with D H Lawrence’s Ship of Death.
Carol’s Christmas
A festive piece for SATB choir and piano, with a dash of irony. It wasn’t meant to be a skit on Noel Coward, but it headed off in that direction – see what you think! And apologies to Sir Noel’s blithe spirit …
The Oxen revised
This setting of Thomas Hardy’s famous poem has been slightly revised.
